Welcome to our journey. The purpose of my blog is not only to journal our life experience, but also to share what God is doing in our lives. I do not claim to be an expert in parenting, marriage, or even the Bible. But I do have a heart to share my experiences and the true love that God has for each and every one of us. What Would You Do?

I am sitting here watching the show "What Would You Do?". I can barely see through my tears. I can not believe how people can do nothing. I came in about half way through the show. First there's a Muslim woman in a store. The guy behind the counter won't serve her. He tells her how she's not an American because she's wearing a head scarf. Most people just stand there and say nothing. Then there are those who actually jump in and praise him for this. Seriously? A few are bold enough to say something and stand up for this poor woman.

The next segment is about a well dressed woman who passes out in the middle of the sidewalk. Within 6 seconds someone helps her. Although some people do keep walking most stop. Then they put a man out there. A man who appears to be homeless. What do you suppose happens? 80 some people pass him by!!!!! Finally, a sweet black lady with a cane stops. She can't really bend down and so she stands there asking people to help this man. She repeatedly says "can you call this man an ambulance?". Do you think anyone stops? NO! It makes me cry all over again just thinking about it. They just keep on walking. And this woman is beside herself that no one will help this man. Finally, someone stops. I'm beyond sad. I can NOT believe this. But the sad reality is that this is what people do all the time. My husband goes to the Dorothy Day Center almost every week to feed and minister to the homeless. There are people laying around all over the place...people just walk or drive on by. They're ignored. :( I don't even have words to say.

How can people just walk around someone who needs help? How can people just ignore someone in trouble? Even if, and that's a big IF, the guy was just drunk and passed out, does he still not need help? But what if he had a heart attack? I mean how can you assume he's just passed out, if that indeed is what you're assuming. Wow! I just shake my head. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I guess I wouldn't have believed it.

Are we really too busy? Are we really that desensitized? Are we really that uncaring?  Someone tell me.

  1. I, too, do not understand it. I am amazed and saddened beyond belief when I watch that show, which depicts realistic situations that occur every day on our country. There was one episode with an actress who portayed herself as having drunk too much and an actor who comes on to her and tries to get her to leave with him. So many people just stood around and watched. There were a few who intervened, but even one off duty police officer didn't get involved and made comments himself about what he'd like to do with her. Many women disappear this way every year and it's because people don't get involved. Is it busy-ness, fear, self-centeredness, ignorance? I don't know, but I'm glad the show is on to raise awareness about how our lack of involvement affects others.

  2. I don't usually watch TV on Fridays so I've only seen this show a handful of times. I'm not sure I've ever been this upset though. I can't believe what you saw. Yes, that's how people end up dead! I'm glad the show is on too. I'm just in disbelief! Thanks for commenting.

  3. I think part of it, when it comes to coming to someone's defense, is fear. People are crazy in today's society and will shoot.

As for someone on the street that needs help, people will judge by appearance before deciding to help. It's not right, but it's what we do now. It's a shame that so many people only have compassion for people of their own race or class.

I don't think it will get any better. The people who don't respond always have weak excuses to not doing so. They should be ashamed.

  4. Wow, I will have to check that out! Sounds like the majority of the world though. Most people don't care if it doesn't affect them or the ones that they love.
I've been frustrated lately with the news, with the school system, with CPS... :(
Bullies get defended, criminals get defended...the innocent and the victims get stepped on.
Sorry, I got off the subject! But when I read your blog my first thought was "evil wins when good men do nothing."
    Glad I stopped in :)
